That history explains why an old court file, obituary, news report, or family record may name Wayne State Prison even though no current roster exists there. When it operated, the institution belonged to the Georgia Department of Corrections system. A person could leave through discharge at sentence completion, parole, transfer to another GDC facility, transfer under a detainer, or another lawful state-prison outcome. “Discharge” means the sentence or custody obligation ended as recorded by the state. Parole means conditional community release before the full sentence expires. A transfer is not a community release.
